Jerry Ren Wins AAAE Student Prize Competition

Jerry Ren (PhD candidate in economics) has been awarded the 2010 AAAE Student Prize for Economic Policy for his research paper entitled The paradox of genetic competition: A study on the price dynamics for statin drugs reimbursed by the NS Pharmacare. The Atlantic Association of Applied Economists, a chapter member of the Canadian Association of Business Economists, awards annually the best policy research conducted by students in the Atlantic region of Canada.

The purpose of this competition is to encourage student interest in economic policy issues in the Atlantic region. A prize will be awarded to the student making the best presentation on an economic policy topic (e.g., economic development, fiscal policy, trade policy, labour market policy, environmental policy). Preference will be given to presentations relating to economic issues in Atlantic Canada. The competition is open to final year undergraduate and graduate students at universities in Atlantic Canada.

Congratulations Rosanna!

Rosanna Nicol, economics and history major, is one of 11 Canadian recipients of the 2009 Rhodes scholarships.  She will be off to Oxford University in the fall to pursue a master's degree in development.  Read Dal News article.

Measurement of Economic Well-being in Canada

The Centre for the Study of Living Standards (CSLS) released new estimates of well-being In Canada and 13 other OECD countries. The Index of Economic Well-being (IEWB) estimates are released in two reports, authored by Lars Osberg and CSLS Executive Director Andrew Sharpe. Read reports.

KLEIN, Erwin

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Erwin Klein on March 14, 2009. Erwin was a member of the Department of Economics from1967 to 1998. He earned a law degree from the University of Buenos Aires, followed by a doctorate in Economics, Dr. rer. pol. in economics from Kiel and Hamburg. While he was a full-time faculty member, he went on to obtain a M.Sc. in Mathematics at Dalhousie.

Erwin became a Full Professor in 1978. He served as Chair of the Department of Economics from 1983 to 1994. He was a well respected and very successful scholar. His interests included Mathematics, Mathematical Economics, the Philosophy of Science and Model Theory. Following retirement, Erwin and his wife Estelle settled down in Argentina. Erwin continued teaching as a professor in the graduate program of the Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires.

Erwin is survived by his wife Estelle Hammengren-Klein, his daughter Veronica (Montreal), his step-daughters Rachel (United States) and Maria (Sweden).


Anonymous Prize in Economics

Fergus Parkinson is this year's recipient of the Anonymous Prize in Economics. The prize was awarded to Fergus for his paper "How the Big Apple Improves the Orchard: Examining Urbanization as a Catalyst for Development."

U.L.G. Rao Memorial Prize in Economics

Emory Muir (MA) is this year's recipient of the U.L.G. Rao Memorial Prize in Economics. The prize is awarded to a Master's student with the highest GPA in MA core classes

Professor W. Russell Maxwell Memorial Scholarship

Benjamin Evans, Kaylyn Fraser, Nicholas Hartley, Jesse Joice, Matthew MacEwan, Yuri Panin and Andrew Sapiano are recipients of a Professor W. Russell Maxwell Memorial Scholarship Award for 2008-09.
