Economics Teaching Assistant Award, 2012-13 Mico Schwartzentruber (MA) and Paul Spin (PhD) are this year's recipients of the Economics Teaching Award. The intent of the award is to celebrate the invaluable contribution of teaching assistants to the economics student experience. Specifically, recognition will be given annually to an outstanding TA who inspires students and demonstrates excellence in his or her TA duties. U.L.G. Rao Memorial Prize in Economics, 2012-13 Wenshuang Yu (MA) is this year's recipient of the U.L.G. Rao Memorial Prize in Economics. The prize is awarded to the Master's student(s) with the highest GPA in MA core classes. Economics Honours Thesis Prize, 2012-13 Greg Walsh (BSc Honours) is this year's recipient of the Economics Honours Thesis Prize for his paper entitled "Quality Over Quantity: A Study of Quarterback Performance and Salary Determinants in the Modern NFL." The Economics Honours Thesis Prize is awarded to the Honours student with the best honours thesis, as determined by the Selection Committee. Wolf Receives The Governors’ Award for 2013 We are pleased to announce that Aaron Wolf (BSc Econ) was named as one of the recipients of The Governors’ Awards for 2013. The Governors’ Awards are the top student awards at Dalhousie University. They recognize students who contribute to the quality and vitality of the university and the achievement of its mission, through both their academic accomplishments and their involvement in campus life. Up to four awards each year are awarded for exceptional contributions or leadership in such areas as university governance, development of a sense of community on campus, community service, internationalizing the campus, visual or performing arts, minority access, or athletics, while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or above. Congratulations Aaron! Anonymous Prize in Economics Jonathan Deal (BSc) and Peng Fei Li (BSc Hons) are recipients of the Anonymous Prize in Economics for 2011-12. The prize is awarded to an Economics student or students, not in their last year, "who has (have) shown through an essay outstanding promise of successfully applying economics to the solution of human problems." Both Deal and Li were nominated by their Econometrics (Econ 3338) professor, Courtney Ward, for their papers entitled: "An Essay on the Effect of Changes in State-Level Tax Burden on the Rate of Larceny Theft" (Deal) and "Effects of the Minimum Wage on the Employment of Teenagers and Young Adults in Canada" (Li). Maxwell Scholarship Award Winners 2012-13 Junkai Bi, William Buckley, Wei Chu, Emily Jackson, Peng Fei Li, Shanwen Li, Yu Takagi, Wan Nur Iylia Wan Yusoff, Zhen Wang, Aaron Wolf, Xiaowei Yang, Yang Yang, and Zhaohui Zhang are recipients of a Professor W. New Appointments Abdul Aleem (PhD Université Paris 13) joined the Department of Economics as an Instructor (one-year limited term appointment) on July 1, 2012. Abdul’s former position was Assistant Professor at the University of New Brunswick – Saint John campus. Ruth Forsdyke (PhD Simon Fraser University) began a three-year limited term appointment as Instructor in the Department of Economics on July 1, 2012. Casey Warman (PhD Carleton) joined the Department of Economics as an Assistant Professor on August 1, 2012. Casey’s former position was as a Term Adjunct Assistant Professor at Queen’s University. | |

Principles of Economics Prize, 2011-12 Julie Melanson (BSc) is this year's recipient of the Principles of Economics Prize. The prize is awarded to the undergraduate Economics major with the highest combined average in the Principles of Microeconomics (ECON 1101) and Principles of Macroeconomics (ECON 1102) sequence of courses. Economic Theory Prize, 2011-12 Katherine Ryan (BSc) is this year's recipient of the Economic Theory Prize. The prize is awarded to the undergraduate Economics major with the highest combined average in the Intermediate Microeconomics (ECON 2200 or 2220) and Intermediate Macroeconomics (ECON 2201) sequence of courses. Economics Students Receive CFA Student Scholarships Shuo Sun (B.Sc. Honours) and Wenshuang Yu (MA candidate) have been selected as two of Dalhousie's CFA Student Scholarship winners. CFA Institute is the global, not-for-profit association of investment professionals that awards the CFA and CIPM designations. Candidates for the CFA Program include students entering the investment field, professionals increasing their expertise and marketability, and people making a career change into the investment profession from other disciplines. | |

2011 Albert Berry Prize Winners The Economics Department is pleased to announce that Daniel Rosenblum has been named as one of two Albert Berry Junior Scholar Paper Prize winners for 2011. Daniel won for his paper "Economic Incentives for Sex-Selective Abortion in India." Named after Professor Albert Berry from the University of Toronto, the Albert Berry Prize is awarded annually to the best paper submitted to the Canadian Development Economics Study Group sessions by a graduate student or new scholar in development economics. | |
